Hi!  Helen Richardson called me on Sunday afternoon with an idea for a Christmas "giving" idea for our youth group.  It's a program that she personally participates in.  It is called "Operation Christmas Child".  It is an organization called "Samaritan's Purse" and was started and is run by Billy Graham's son, Franklin Graham.

The Operation Christmas Child (OCC) program provides Christmas presents to children around the world that are not as blessed as we are.  They send "presents" all over the world to places like China, South America, Africa, etc.  We would purchase items to put in a decorated/wrapped shoe box.  We would decide it it was for a boy/girl and age group 2-4, 5-9, 10-14.  Some ideas of items to put inside:

Toys
small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch-A-Sketch, toys that like up or make noise, Slinky, etc.

School Supplies
pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

Hygiene Items
toothbruch, toothpaste, mild bar soap, comb, washcloth, etc.

Other
Hard candy and lollipops, mints, gum, t-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights

We would then pack the shoe box with items and take it to a "shipping center" with $7.00 postage for each box.  We could put a "tracking" on it and then we could see who around the world got our boxes.

I thought this sounded kind of neat and we all know how much the kids like to do things for others.  We could also solicit the congregation for items to donate to the cause.  I would post a list of wanted items to make sure we got things that are allowed.

Please give me feed-back regarding this.  If you think we should not participate in this and find something else, that's completely fine.  I just wanted to find a way for the kids to truly "give" to others this holiday season.  There may be some neat domestic (mainland USA) ideas as well, I just don't know about them.  The only catch to the OCC program is that we would have to package the boxes during the Nov. 15 meeting so they could get shipped in time.

If you would like to look at the website for OCC it is www.samaritanspurse.org

Thanks a million!
